Week in Review

Films I've Viewed

  • The Bribe (1949) - Robert Taylor (Rigby), Ava Gardner (Elizabeth Hintten), Charles Laughton (J.J. Bealer), Vincent Price (Carwood), John Hodiak (Tigwell "Tug" Hintten).  Taylor plays a cop, sent to find a group of people smuggling airplane motors and selling them illegally.  Ava is a down on her luck singer in a seedy nightclub, torn between her attraction to Rigby and her devotion to her shady, dying husband.  Elizabeth's husband is part of the gang, so if he does anything it will hurt her.  Robert Taylor is divine.  One of my favorite leading men.  Ava played the sultry singer well.  I don't think she was worth the trouble, but then, Ava is not one of my favorite actresses.  Charles Laughton and Vincent Price were fabulous as the bad guys.  Their portrayals were worth the film alone.  Well worth the view.

A Peak in Eleanor Powell's Steamer Trunk

Eleanor Powell's Steamer Trunk

Shipping Address:
Eleanor Powell
1012 Cove Way
Beverly Hills, California
USA

I tied to map the address, and it does not appear that the number exists on Cove Way anymore.  The number must have been changed at some point after she lived there.  The address did exist as of 1956 when her husband at the time Glenn Ford registered to vote.

The contents as far as I can tell include:
Three-pane mirror
Hat box
Satchel labeled "Rosin Box"
Box of portable lights possibly
From the labels remaining, I could only read that she had one drawer of hose

What other treasures would have been in this steamer trunk?  I'm thinking some fabulous costumes and tap shoes.

What 100 Stars Want in 1956 - Glenn Ford

What does Glenn Ford want in 1956:

1. "Personally, Ellie and I want a house at the beach". - Sounds lovely. Me too!

2. ""I've had the richest year careerwise any actor ever has had the good fortune to have "Interrupted Melody," "Blackboard Jungle," "Trial" (1st picture), and "Jubal." Professionally, I couldn't wish for more." - I really enjoy Blackboard Jungle, but I still have to say my favorite Glenn Ford film is Gilda.

3. ""Some of the pictures I've made have made me even more thoughtful than before on matters such as racial intolerance and juvenile delinquency. As a citizen, I hope 1956 finds us taking great strides toward solving these problems."

Up Next - Greer Garson and Mitzi Gaynor
