The Fly is Here

I saw the original The Fly (1958) film yesterday and was struck by how wonderful it actually was.

Sometimes the Sci-Fi and acting can just be so cheesy, but I thought the wife, played by Patricia Owens, was wonderful.

You have to admit the premise sounds a bit strange and could have been way over the top. A husband creates and matter displacement machine and his matter accidentally gets mixed up with a fly's.

Well, Helene, his wife, spends the film looking for his head which has been been attached to a fly. This could have been extremely poorly, but I was totally enthralled with the film.

Spoiler alert
The ending was super shocking and I was incredibly freaked out by the husband's head on the fly's body about to be eaten by a giant spider. I was super grossed out. I would definitely recommend it for anyone who enjoys a fun sci-fi film that is actually very well acted.

I do love it.

And Herbie Marshall gives it an unexpected touch of class, too.
The sequel, Return of the Fly is also good fun. In black and white, sadly, but Vinnie's back for it.

I've never seen either version of this (and actually didn't know there was an older one) - I may have to check it out. Here's hoping the giant spider doesn't give me the heebie jeebies. :)

Woo-hoo...sounds spectacularly ghoulish! (But fun, for sure!) Sorry I haven't been around much; my knee is still healing after surgery...but I'm getting "there"! Thanks for all of your delightful visits!
Hugs,
Coralie

I didn't actually know there was a 50s version - I've seen the 80s one with Jeff Goldblum. Where did you manage to find this one? Thanks, Emma
