      Babe Ruth, well known baseball legend, was knocked out when he ran into the wall trying to catch a ball.  They were playing at Griffith Stadium in Washington D.C.

     Mrs. Sacha Guitry, aka Yvonne Printemps (25 July 1894 - 19 January 1977), was a much-beloved French actress.  Working on stage on screen, she was known for her operatic voice.  Lovely (watch the link and you'll understand), she began her career at the tender age of 12 at La Cigale, becoming a Folies Bergere dancer by 13.  Her stage name, Printemps (meaning springtime), was given to her there because of her delightful disposition.  Yvonne appeared in 10 films.  One of the things she is mainly known for is her 1919 - 1934 marriage to French actor Sacha Guitry.  

DeMille's Debris

I have been obsessed with reading about the amazing Sphinx set piece that has been found and reassembled in a California desert.  The sphinx was rediscovered after being buried for decades.  It was rediscovered and is currently being reassembled with Elmer's Glue no less, and will be on display at the Guadalupe Dunes Center.  I am totally intrigued.  It's definitely another thing to add to my bucket list!  Who knew there was such an important Hollywood set hidden?  Who knows what else could be found out there?

Films I've Viewed

• The Bribe (1949) - Robert Taylor (Rigby), Ava Gardner (Elizabeth Hintten), Charles Laughton (J.J. Bealer), Vincent Price (Carwood), John Hodiak (Tigwell "Tug" Hintten).  Taylor plays a cop, sent to find a group of people smuggling airplane motors and selling them illegally.  Ava is a down on her luck singer in a seedy nightclub, torn between her attraction to Rigby and her devotion to her shady, dying husband.  Elizabeth's husband is part of the gang, so if he does anything it will hurt her.  Robert Taylor is divine.  One of my favorite leading men.  Ava played the sultry singer well.  I don't think she was worth the trouble, but then, Ava is not one of my favorite actresses.  Charles Laughton and Vincent Price were fabulous as the bad guys.  Their portrayals were worth the film alone.  Well worth the view.

Scarlet Pages (1930)

Scarlet Pages (1930) - Elsie Ferguson (Mary Bancroft), John Halliday (John Remington), Marian Nixon (Nora Mason), Grant Withers (Bob Lawrence), Daisy Belmore (Mrs. Kennedy).  Nightclub dancer Nora is accused of killing her father.  Star woman lawyer Mary Bancroft believes that Nora killed her father solely to protect her mother who was abused.  District attorney Remington is the opposing lawyer, determined to get his man, or girl in this case.  Then the film gets complicated.  

Vintage Inspiration - Classy Clara

Clara Bow is a fun spitfire of a character.  Adorable and full of life, she is a film icon.  She is probably best known for her role as Betty Lou in 1927's "It", a great film.

Films I've Viewed

Louise Latimer and Owen Davis; The Plot Thickens (1936)

• Plot Thickens (1936) - James Gleason, Zazu Pitts, Louise Latimer, Owen Davis.  Zazu Pitts replaces Edna Mae Oliver in the role of Hildegarde Withers.  Murder and a jewel found, known as the Sultan's Emerald, have both Hildegarde and Inspector Piper on the case.  James Gleason plays Inspector Piper in a great, crusty way.  While Pitts does an admirable job as Withers, she just can't hold a torch to Oliver's portrayal.

Fashion Friday - Fath and Fashion

The lovely Genevieve Boucher de la Bruyere and French fashion designer Jacques Fath are my fashion inspirations for today.  Jacques postwar fashion (post World War II, that is), made him a contemporary of Dior and his "New Look".  Fath is probably best known for designing Moira Shearer's costumes in The Red Shoes as well as Rita Hayworth's wedding dress to Prince Aly Khan.

Films I've Watched

• Shock (1946) - Vincent Price shines.  Who else could twist the mind like Price.  Delicious!  And Lynn Bari's performance was surprisingly strong.  Not having seen many Bari films, I thought it wonderful.

Vintage Inspiration - Flying Flapper

While I am crazy afraid of flying, I do find vintage air travel intriguing.  This plane is flying over New York City in 1922.  If I knew the city better, perhaps I could figure out the exact location of this flight.  Can anyone tell what it is flying over?

Lovely Louise

Louise Brooks is an icon - no question.  I've only seen one of her films, Pandora's Box.  She is so well thought of, I definitely need to see more of her films.

Fashion Friday - Cloche Cool 2

Just like last week, I've got another cute example of a cute cloche hat.  This cool woman looks like she is on the way home from work.  A chic polka dot dress, cute heels, and a cloche hat make this the perfect work day attire in 1928, when this picture was taken.

I had no idea Louise Brooks had freckles!  I just had to post this photo when I saw it on Glamour Daze.  As someone who lives with freckles, and loves them, it's fun to see a star display theirs.  It just adds another dimension to her I didn't know about.

Betty Blythe (1 September 1893 - 7 April 1972), was quite the silent film star.  When the talkies came about, she transitioned to a character actress.  With over 160 credits to her name, many not credited, Blythe appears to be another glamorous star which I would love to have seen.

Doesn't this girl look pleased as punch to be advertising Atlas Flour?  Must be tasty if it gets such a reaction.  

Another happy camper

This girl doesn't seem any more pleased to be eating Atlas Flour.  Who thought up this advertising campaign? Let's show people how delicious the food is by featuring sad children.  While they are cute, I'm not so sure about Atlas Flour's edibility.  

Atlas Flour Fire

Atlas Flour was destroyed by fire on December 11, 1926.  The damage was valued at $100,00.  Twelve fire trucks and several fire boats were required to quell the blaze.  While the building and the main elevator were destroyed, $235,000 worth of oats were saved.

Vintage Christmas - Street Decorations

It's fun to see streets change through time.  I thought I'd take a look at how Christmas decorations changed on one street through time.  These photographs are of Nicollet Avenue in nearby Minneapolis.  I wish these kinds of decorations were still put up.  My favorite photo has to be 1937.  The sunburst star is quite striking.  What a glorious drive it must have been!
