Clark Gable - according to this 1940 Photoplay quiz anyway. If you look on IMDB, his first credit is 1923's 'Fighting Blood', a boxing film where he is not credited. IMDB consider's his first film 1924's 'White Man', a film about a diamond mine in South Africa. Several sources consider this Clark Gable's debut. Following this film Gable made several uncredited appearances. The first western Gable seems to appear in is 1931's 'The Painted Desert', starring Hopalong Cassidy's William Boyd. Perhaps that is the film they are referring to. Or of course, they could just be making it up. That good old Hollywood publicity machine. Or could the diamond mine film be considered a western? I'm not sure. If anyone has seen it, let me know.
