Are you a Scarlett or a Melanie?

I spent the night watching my all time favorite film, Gone With The Wind. I have to say, the HD and restoration done on this classic was fabulous. Fabulous scenery, wonderful dialogue, thrilling music, fantastic costumes by the legendary Walter Plunket - a total tour de force . . . what's not to like? Yeah I know the problems of the film, but it's a movie for heavens sake! But it got me thinking, am I a Scarlett?

I think I'm a Scarlett in many ways. Not the 18 inch waist, of course, but I'm childlike as she is in some ways and I'm definitely a survivor! Now I'm in one of the most troubling times in my life - hoping I'll be a Surviving Scarlett and not a Melting Melanie. Health problems, no sleep, amazing amounts of stress, house falling apart, in laws coming for a visit, trying to have enough food to eat, and many other problems I can't talk about. So, to quote Scarlett: "As God is my witness, as God is my witness they're not going to lick me. I'm going to live through this and when it's all over, I'll never be hungry again."

But I also think I'm an Ashley Wilkes. Not that I have people pining over me, but that I find it really difficult to deal with the reality of life (depression does that, you know) and I've always felt like I've never really fit in this world. You know that feeling (well maybe ya'll don't) where it feels like everything is going on around you and you have a sort of out of body experience and wonder what on Earth is going on and how did you get here? It's as if you got transplanted from a different place or time? (Hence the blog name)

So, even though I aspire to be a Melanie Wilkes or even an Aunt Pitty, I'm probably a Scarlett - Ashley mix. What about you?

  1. I am definitely Scarlett. Definitely. I don't mind it at all. Never wanted to be Melanie. Too timid for my tastes. So is Ashley for that matter.

  2. Sounds like you are really going through some tough times right now (sorry to hear that) - so it's a good thing that you have Scarlet's fierce determination! You know, I forgot about that trait of Scarlet's. I always just thought of her as a spoiled brat - and liked Melanie because she was so sweet and unselfish. But now that I'm older, I think I'd prefer to be fiery Scarlet than milquetoast Melanie.
